What is this?

Hello!

Welcome to my "digital garden" for all the various things I do or make or write or observe or bring into existence. I've been wanting to move away from reliance on social media companies for collating this stuff, and so this site is forming a replacement of Facebook, and Instagram etc. This way, whatever I curate or make and upload here, I remain in-charge of it.

I expect this to be predominantly a mix of my photographs and perhaps some snippets of my professional life. However, I hope to start writing more fiction and non-fiction which will be put here!

Who are you?

Probably you know me because I sent you a link to this site. However, if you've stumbled upon this site by accident...

Professionally...

I am Huw Swanborough, an Australian scientist currently living in Zurich, Switzerland. My PhD (University of Zurich) was in auditory neuroscience, focusing on perception of emotional vocalisations within noisy environments. My specialisations lie within fMRI, psychoacoustics, emotion/affect processing, signal processing, and neuroscience of music. I also have a BMus in Music from Kingston University and an MSc in Neuroscience of Music from Goldsmiths (The Music, Mind, and Brain group - https://www.musicmindbrain.com/)

I am currently employed at the Neural Control of Movement Group at ETH, Zurich - https://ncm.hest.ethz.ch/.

Personally...

As is reasonably self evident from the posts and my professional background, my personal interests focus on a wide range of creative pursuits. I am an incorrigible nerd about the construction of 'media', e.g. the creative processes/structures of stories; composition and analysis of music; understanding the technical aspects of visual composition etc. I have also been playing music for about 20 years and have been known to love writing on occasion.

My other hobbies include hiking, cute huts (#gnomecorelife), snow, the sea, history, and anything esotericly odd.

What are you doing here?

After finishing PhD I decided I needed to create a 'digital garden'. A space where I can curate various creative/expressive things without specific goals, deadlines, themes, or reasons. I have become extremely tired of contemporary trends that we should be 'consistent' as people - staying on brand, on message - without allowance for all the weird idiosyncracies and contradictions we have, and a digital garden aims to just collate all of those - https://www.deemjournal.com/stories/digital-gardens

This is that... A digital garden full of stuff that I think mostly only I will like... But it's my garden... Hey, no...get off the strawberries.. eurgh.

I don't know you!

Well, apparently you can sign up to a mailing list if you really wanted to get to know me. I won't tell you what to do...

(Apparently you can even pay for this? I mean... I guess if you want to...)
